What Are The Substrates, Types And Features Of Industrial Paints?
30 Sep 2021

Industrial paints are mainly powders or pigmented liquids used to protect as well as beautify substrates. They are widely used in several industries including architectural, aerospace, automotive, electronics and construction industries. Industrial painting services are in great demand in Dublin. Many industrial paints can be applied with rollers or brushes. In this blog, we are going to discuss substrates, types and features of industrial paints.

Substrates:

Industrial paints contain a number of substrates. Some of them include

  • Asphalt
  • Concrete
  • Masonry
  • Metal
  • Ceramic
  • Fabric & fibre
  • Glass
  • Fibreglass
  • Paper & paperboard
  • Plastic
  • Rubber
  • Elastomer
  • Wood

Types:

In terms of industrial chemistry, paints may vary widely. Typically they include a solvent, pigments, additives, a solvent, a diluent, etc. Solvent-based paints consist of VOCs volatile organic compounds as the carrier. Water-based paints mainly consist of water, but also chemicals like glycol ethers and alcohols. Several types of industrial paints include:

  1. Acrylic: A synthetic resin is mainly used in water-based paints or high-performance latex. This type of paint is ideal for oily surfaces, bonding metal, ferrite, glass, & plastics.
  2. Epoxy: Epoxy paints are mainly used in aircraft components. They are highly resistant to environmental degradation as compared to resins like alkyds.
  3. Polyester: Polyester paints are unsaturated and are mainly used in industrial marine applications.
  4. Polyurethane: Polyurethane paints include a rubber-like elastomer based on the organic isocyanates condensation with resins that consist of hydroxyl groups.
  5. PTFE or Polytetrafluoroethylene: PTFE is a type of engineering plastic mainly characterized by excellent thermal stability. It has universal chemical resistance as well as low friction.

Key features of industrial paints

Industrial paints are mainly available with a wide range of special features including:

  • Anti-static or conductive
  • Fire retardant
  • Waterproof
  • Heat resistant
  • Rust preventive
  • Interior or exterior
  • Water repellant
  • Ideal for touch-up coatings
  • Withstand high temperatures effectively

Apart from that, industrial paints are also elastomeric which means they are ideal for substrates that can be stretched to twice the original shape & then returned to dimensions. Moreover, they are also electro-resistive. So, they include both nonconductive and conductive materials.

The importance of industrial paints is huge. They protect metals from corrosion, rust and other elements and add beauty. Industrial paints can also be used in military, marine, optical, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, medical and textile applications.
